Do Not Ignore These 5 Signs That Your AC Refrigerant Leaks

One common issue that most air conditioning units have is refrigerant leaks.

A cooling system that starts to leak refrigerant can cause different kinds of efficiency and performance problems.

If those issues get worse, you might end up paying a lot for air conditioning repair.

Five Signs Your AC Refrigerant Leaks

You need to know what signs to look for to minimize the possible damage caused by a refrigerant leak.

It is important to note that under normal conditions, your AC unit shouldn’t be losing refrigerant.

Hissing Sound Coming from the Unit

Your air conditioning unit’s condenser is outside, so you might not hear any hissing sounds right away.

However, if you start noticing that your system is not cooling or you have an increased utility bill, consider stepping outside to check your unit.

An abnormal hissing sound from the condenser is a sign that you need to call a technician.

Frozen Evaporator Coils

If your AC isn’t working right, try taking a look inside.

Ice inside the unit is an indication that your AC refrigerant leaks.

If the levels of refrigerant circulating through the evaporator coils are insufficient, the coils cannot absorb heat properly.

This will leads to a condensation on the coils, which makes them freeze.

If the coils are indeed frozen, turn your AC unit off ASAP so it can thaw and schedule air conditioning repair with a trusted professional air conditioning repair service to address this.

Warm Air Coming from AC

Do you feel warm air coming from your air conditioner?

Or did you notice that one of the air vents in your home is producing warmer air compared to the others?

Unusually High Electric Bills

An unusual spike in your electric bills is a cause for concern.

If you’ve noticed that your energy bill is higher than usual, and you are also experiencing the symptoms above, it might be a refrigerant leak.

Your AC refrigerant leaks make your unit work harder to cool your home.

When the system works harder than it should, it also uses more energy.

Reduced Airflow

When you put your hand next to the vents, you may notice that there is little to no airflow.

An air conditioning system that is low on refrigerant cannot produce enough cold air to keep your home cool and comfortable, so reduced airflow is another sign of a possible refrigerant leak.

Have you noticed that your AC is not performing quite the way it used to?

Does it feel like it’s not reducing the indoor temperature at all? Or is it taking a long time to cool down?

A leaking AC unit can cost you a lot of money over time if left unfixed.

If you suspect a leak, it’s always a good idea to schedule an air conditioning repair, so you can keep issues from getting worse.

“I was fortunate enough to have a client of mine refer me to Kurt (usually I’m the one doling out recommendations).  I needed a trustworthy, knowledgeable and competently trained HVAC contractor since mine had hung up his toolbelt.  In the past 7 years I’ve known Kurt, he has given me, as well as the many clients I have referred him to, the very best in service at a very fair price.  Guardian Heating and Air Conditioning won’t disappoint! ”
